Be Sensitive To Others
I said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?”
Ecclesiastes 2:2 ESV
I said of laughter, “Madness!” and of mirth, “What does it accomplish?”
Ecclesiastes 2:2 NKJV
After looking at these two versions, I went to the dictionary for more insight for words not used much today.
- Mirth – Gladness or gaiety as shown by or accompanied by laughter
- Madness – Behavior or thinking that is very foolish or dangerous; extreme folly
I see this as a warning to guard against being insensitive to those around you. There is a difference in foolish laughter and joking which can lead to hurtful things being said, or no care given to those who may be experiencing grief or sorrow. There is also silliness that leads people to drink and eat in excess wherein they end up doing foolish things that they will later regret.
